The Goldfields is geographically the largest of the seven regions in the WA Country Health Service (WACHS), covering the entire south east corner of the state.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the major regional centre and provides support and leadership for services across the Goldfields.

WACHS Goldfields provides comprehensive health care to the community of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as well as the surrounding communities of Leonora, Laverton, Leinster, Kambalda, Coolgardie and Menzies.

The Goldfields region extends to the southern coast and Esperance and its surrounding communities of Norseman, Gibson, Grass Patch, Salmon Gums, Condingup and Cascade.

Public Health Services are also provided to the Aboriginal communities in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, Wiluna and Tjuntuntjara in close partnership with the relevant Aboriginal Medical Services.

Kalgoorlie Health Campus

Kalgoorlie Health Campus is a 106 bed inpatient facility and one of the largest regional hospitals in WA.

Population Health services

The WACHS Goldfields Population Health team provides service across the entire region, in partnership with a diverse range of agencies and colleagues to provide relevant holistic programs with particular emphasis on Aboriginal people and communities and individuals at greatest risk.

Services provided by Population Health within WACHS Goldfields include the following:

Community Health

Community health centres are located in Kalgoorlie,Boudler, Kambalda, Coolgardie, Leonora, Laverton, Leinster, Menzies, Norseman and Esperance. Community health teams in these facilities deliver a wide range of primary health care services. The primary health care programs provided address child health, school and youth health, immunisations, , chronic disease and prevention.

In Menzies, Coolgardie and Kambalda, community nurses provide outpatient and nurse led emergency services as required, in addition to primary health programs.

Allied Health services

There are two allied health teams in the region, one based in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and one in Esperance. These teams work from across the different WACHS sites to provide a broad range of services to all age groups across the continuum of care, that is, inpatients, outpatients, rehabilitation and in the community setting including Child Development services.

Both allied health teams also provide regular outreach services to smaller sites across the region.

Public health and health promotion

The Public Health Unit, based in Kalgoorlie, coordinates and manages communicable disease prevention and control, sexual health, regional immunisation coordination, the trachoma program and pandemic disaster planning across the region. Support for infection control programs is also provided. The Public Health Unit facilitates and supports general practitioners, hospitals, community health teams, local government and other agencies in delivering public health services.

Health promotion is an integral part of all services provided by Population Health. Health promotion officers are based in Kalgoorlie and support the activities of other sectors within WACHS Goldfields. The Health Promotion Officers have regional roles and work with other government and non-government agencies and communities to develop community specific programs in collaboration with other agencies. Health Promotion Officers provide resources, education, and training to individuals, groups, internal staff and external agencies.

Population Health service delivery models

Services are delivered to community members in community health centres, health clinics, hospitals, schools, homes and a variety of other community settings. Services are delivered using a variety of strategies to engage with individuals and groups. Where appropriate, multidisciplinary, trans-disciplinary and community development approaches are used.

Mental health services

Goldfields Mental Health Service (GMHS) comprises three Tier 3 (Specialist Intervention) mental health clinical services, which are the Mental Health Inpatient Service at Kalgoorlie Health Campus, and the Community Mental Health Teams at Kalgoorlie and Esperance.

Kalgoorlie – Community Mental Health

This service provides Tier 3 adult , Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and older adult mental health services. It is staffed by the following:

  • Consultant Psychiatrist/Clinical Director (currently vacant)
  • Visiting Senior Medical Officer (SMO)
  • Consultant Psychiatrist (shared with the Mental Health Inpatient Unit)
  • Visiting child and adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Visiting older adult Consultant Psychiatrist (one day per month)
  • Team leader
  • Nine clinical staff (adult)
  • Older adult clinician
  • Three CAMHS clinicians
  • Youth Counsellor
  • Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinator
  • Senior Aboriginal Mental Health Officer
  • A female and a male Aboriginal Mental Health Worker
  • Mental Health Officer
  • Two administrative staff

The regional CAMHS Team Leader is also located in Kalgoorlie. Services are provided within the Community Mental Health service rooms, in the client’s home, in the general community or at shared care locations.

The Kalgoorlie team provides regular outreach services to Coolgardie, Kambalda, Leonora, Laverton, Menzies and several remote Aboriginal communities.

Esperance Community Mental Health

Esperance Community Mental Health provides Tier 3 adult , older adult mental health services and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), operating out of two locations.

The adult team consists:

  • Team Leader
  • Four clinical staff (adult/older adult)
  • Visiting older adult Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Two administration staff

The CAMHS team includes:

  • CAMHS clinician
  • Youth Counsellor
  • Administrative staff member

CAMHS psychiatry is provided by a visiting consultant or by videoconference. An Aboriginal MH officer is shared between the adult and CAMHS teams. Services are provided within the Community Mental Health service rooms, in the client’s home, in the general community or at shared care locations.

This team provides in reach services to the Esperance Hospital Monday to Friday for mental health emergencies during office hours. The After Hours On-Call service is triaged through Rurallink 24 hour telephone crisis line with CAMHS using CAMHS after hours support Acute Response team in Perth.

The Esperance team provides a regular outreach service to Norseman.

Mental Health Inpatient Service

Mental Health Inpatient Service is an authorised mental health unit at Kalgoorlie Health Campus under the Mental Health Act 2014. There are six inpatient beds plus a low stimulus room.
