The new $9.422 million State-funded Acute Psychiatric Unit is the first of its kind in Western Australia's north. The $7.9 million Commonwealth-funded paediatric ward replaced the ageing facility at Broome Hospital.

Stage 1 completed 2009

The State Government funded $42 million Stage 1 upgrade to Broome Hospital was completed in December 2009 providing:

  • a new hospital entry and new visitors' area
  • a new administration block

  • a new services building
  • an extension to the acute inpatient wards by 10 beds, including a 4-bed high-dependency unit plus the addition of a neonatal nursery
  • refurbishment of the medical/surgical wards and maternity unit
  • refurbishment of the triage and records storage areas.

Acute Psychiatric Unit

The State Government funded mental health unit provides access to acute psychiatric services closer to home for people living in the Kimberley and Pilbara. It includes 14 private bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, courtyards and entertainment and activity areas in both open and secure ward layout.

Development of the unit was a recommendation of the 2008 Hope Report that followed a coronial inquiry into the alcohol and drug related deaths of 22 indigenous people in the Kimberley.

The unit is managed by the Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service. It is culturally appropriate and services the needs of indigenous consumers who make up 60-70 percent of patients using the unit.

Broome Hospital now has a modern paediatric facility to provide paediatric and obstetric services in the region.

The $7.9 million Commonwealth-funded paediatric ward includes eight beds and four cots.  It replaced the ageing facility which operated from a transportable building at Broome Hospital and provides modern facilities with sufficient capacity to accommodate the projected demand for paediatric and obstetric services in the region.
