Redevelopment works at Merredin Health Service started at the end of 2016 and are making good progress with the first two stages reaching completion.

WA Country Health Service, Wheatbelt Regional Director Sean Conlan said that the redevelopment would strengthen health services in the region.

“Upgrades will include a new emergency department, upgrades to palliative care, medical imaging, sterilising services, administration areas, kitchen and laundry,” Mr Conlan said.

“There will also be a new building for Aboriginal health, allied health and outpatient services such as physiotherapy, school and child health clinics, mental health, consulting rooms for visiting specialists and telehealth amenities.”

Stage 1 of the upgrade included the addition of temporary parking and widening the entrance to the hospital. Stage 2 included the completion of the new visitor car park, though only part of the carpark is available for use while other construction takes place nearby.

Stage 3 involves refurbishment of the palliative care room which is nearing completion.  The room will be comfortably furnished with tables and chairs for family, a kitchenette, fridge, lounge, patient bed, patient recliner chair, TV, wardrobe and bathroom.

Stages 4 and 5 have commenced and include the new emergency department, patient lounge, engineering service upgrades, family consultation room in emergency, medical records room and new outpatient building.

The Merredin Health Service redevelopment is part of the Southern Inland Health Initiative’s $300 million capital works program to improve capital infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Midwest and South West regions. In the Wheatbelt, Merredin, Northam and Narrogin Hospitals are being redeveloped as well as upgrades to 23 small hospitals and health centres across the region.
