New initiative to strengthen mental health services in the South West

An innovative new ‘peer support’ program will strengthen local mental health programs run by the WA Country Health Service in the South West.

The pilot program, which is the first of its kind for Country Health, will employ people with a first-hand experience of mental illness, to support consumers and carers with their mental health journey.

Debbie Easther, Regional Manager South West Mental Health said this exciting new initiative forms part of WACHS Mental Health reform and aims to improve patient centered care. Peer workers will offer great benefits to both consumers and carers attending mental health services.

“We have recognised the enormous benefits someone with a shared experience can offer others at vulnerable times of their lives, particularly in terms of a consumer’s experience and recovery,” she said.   

An informal information session will be run from 5-7pm on January 17 in Bunbury to discuss the new positions.

“I’d encourage consumers and carers who have experiences with mental health services to attend our upcoming information session and consider applying for the peer worker positions,” said Mrs Easther.   

The pilot program will be trialled in the South West over six months.
