WA Country Health Service (WACHS) midwives are bringing their high-calibre maternity skills back to Geraldton Health Campus from 14 September 2021 after their services were temporarily relocated as part of WACHS’ COVID-19 response.

According to Midwest Regional Director Nursing and Midwifery Marie Norris, midwifery teams from Geraldton Health Campus were relocated to St John of God Geraldton Hospital as a protective measure and to allow for additional capacity in case of a surge in patients related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This was a decision made during the stressful and unpredictable early stages of the pandemic,” Ms Norris said.

“It was important that the hospital had capacity to respond to large numbers of COVID positive patients and we were able to work quickly alongside our colleagues at St John of God Geraldton Hospital to make this happen in a way that did not disrupt or interrupt patient care.”

Ms Norris said services reverting back to Geraldton Health Campus meant no change to the exceptional care provided by WACHS Midwest midwives.

“The only difference is the bricks and mortar,” she said.

“Expectant families should be assured that they will be closely supported throughout the transition.

“It’ll be a smooth and coordinated move and our world-class clinicians will be ready and waiting to safely deliver Midwest bubs back home at Geraldton Health Campus.”

Ms Norris acknowledged the entire team at St John of God Geraldton Hospital and thanked them for their support in challenging circumstances.

“The last year has been a great demonstration of public and private collaboration to meet community need,” she said.

WACHS Midwest and St John of God Geraldton Hospital will continue to work closely together on opportunities that deliver benefits to the Midwest community.
