Bunbury redevelopment focuses on a greener, more sustainable future
The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is progressing a $200.1 million capital redevelopment of the Bunbury Regional Hospital to ensure South West residents have access to a contemporary facility that meets their growing needs.
And planning for the future means adopting sustainable design now.
We’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint through the implementation of innovative and energy efficient design solutions at all new and redeveloped facilities – a key pillar of our Environmental and Sustainability Framework.
As part of the Bunbury Regional Hospital redevelopment, WACHS has directly engaged a Sustainability Advisor to drive sustainable decision making at key phases throughout the project.
Historically engaged by external agencies, bringing the role of environmental consultant in-house is allowing WACHS to have greater visibility and control of sustainability measures.
Acting Executive Director Infrastructure and Environment Sonia Ferla said the new role will allow solid evidence to be calculated around the carbon and financial impacts of all environmental initiatives.
“By guiding the design and construction of new buildings and redevelopments, WACHS is fulfilling its commitment to reduce its emissions and operate more sustainably,” Ms Ferla said.
“It’s part of our plan to tackle climate change and reduce the impact of our health services on the environment.”
Workshops have already commenced with members of the Bunbury Regional Hospital redevelopment project team to identify strategies that will increase efficiencies in energy usage, waste management, water consumption and transportation choices.
Adopting these measures will help WACHS to achieve compliance with the WA Climate Change Policy and meet the recommendations of the WA Climate Health Enquiry.
And by ensuring environmental considerations are incorporated into hospital design, WACHS is meeting its commitment to create healthier environments for staff, patients and communities.
