Car club driven to support Avon Valley mums and bubs
Mums and newborns in the Avon Valley region will benefit from a generous donation of two new Masimo neonatal oxygen saturation monitors from the Avon Valley Vintage Vehicle Association.
The Masimo neonatal oxygen saturation monitors - worth a combined $1700 - deliver high-quality and reliable oxygen level and pulse monitoring, allowing midwives and obstetric doctors from the Avon Valley Midwifery Group Practice to quickly assess a newborn baby’s condition and make informed care decisions.
The Avon Valley Midwifery Group Practice based at Northam Hospital is staffed by specialist midwives who work in collaboration with local clinicians to provide maternity and newborn care 24/7.
Since commencing in 2017, the service has supported 128 mothers to birth locally.
WA Country Health Service – Wheatbelt Clinical Midwife Specialist - Endorsed Midwife Karen Coyle said the new monitors are easy to use and ensure babies born at Northam Hospital are receiving the latest in technology-supported healthcare.
“All newborns are monitored closely for two hours after birth, and these new portable monitors are capable of monitoring the oxygen levels in a baby’s blood through a wrist strap keeping bub as comfortable as possible,” Coyle said.
“The new monitors provide us with real-time data on oxygen saturation, respiration and pulse rate, they’re portable and can run continuously for up to 24 hours on a rechargeable battery.”
The Northam-based car club has a long history of supporting the hospital through Classic Car Fairs and Northam Vintage Swap Meets.
