Residents of Newman and surrounding areas who need emergency and hospital care will now be able to receive it at the brand-new emergency department (ED) and hospital, with the first stage of the $61.4 million Newman Health Service now open.

At 8am on Wednesday 18 May, local staff opened the doors to the new ED and hospital including six emergency bays and 12 inpatient beds, as well as all medical imaging, pathology, mental health community health, allied health and all outpatient appointments.

The old ED and hospital are now closed.

Along with the continuity of local emergency services, the Newman Health Service is also telehealth-enabled, giving local staff 24/7 access to a virtual care hub of emergency and other specialists across the Pilbara and in Perth via the highly regarded WA Country Health Service Command Centre.

To streamline the transition, access to the new facility, located via Mindarra Drive and next door to the existing hospital, will be clearly sign-posted.  Staff are also on hand to help locals if they need it.

Sonic GP and the dental clinic appointments will continue as normal in their current location.

The three-staged redevelopment includes a $15 million contribution from BHP and is expected to be complete in 2023.
