Helping older Dongara residents stay in the community they call home
28/06/2022
Older residents of Dongara and surrounding communities will now be able to remain connected to family, friends and loved ones for longer, with the construction of six new purpose-built age-friendly homes in the centre of town.
Officially opened on Tuesday 28 June by Hon. Sandra Carr MLC, the independent living units will ensure residents feel comfortable, supported and most of all – at home.
Constructed with a $2.4 million investment from WA Country Health Service’s $26 million Residential and Dementia Investment Strategy, the homes are designed with simple innovations that can help older people live independently, safely and well in their community.
Each two-bedroom, one-bathroom home is built to the highest possible Liveable Housing Australia design standards for older people, including wide doorways, slip-resistant flooring, light switches and bench tops that are reachable from either sitting or standing height, and space in the bathroom and toilet for grab rails to be installed.
The six new homes are part of a specially designed age-friendly precinct to encourage residents to meet, talk and foster community spirit, with the reassurance of safe pedestrian access to shops and other essential local amenities.
Families will have peace of mind knowing that their elderly loved ones are living over the road from the hospital and other essential community health services at the Dongara Health Service, which is currently being redeveloped and is expected to be completed in 2023.
A total of 46 new homes have been constructed across regional Western Australia as part of the Residential and Dementia Investment Strategy as well as a community centre that is due to open in Albany later in 2022.
The Dongara homes were constructed in partnership with the Shire of Irwin. Ongoing management of the facility will be coordinated by the Shire.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development – as part of the Country Health Innovation initiative – also contributed to the build of this new facility.
WA Country Health Service is proud to work alongside our partners to deliver this important service for the Dongara community.
