WA Country Health Service (WACHS) has brought together Aboriginal healthcare workers from across the Kimberley for a three-day forum to discuss new and innovative ways to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people.
Attended by WA Country Health Services Kimberley Aboriginal employees, the forum focussed on Aboriginal staff leadership, palliative care support for Aboriginal people, Aboriginal employment strategies, culturally validated tools and health literacy.
WA Country Health Service Regional Director Kimberley Rex O’Rourke said the forum was key in providing a platform for Aboriginal healthcare workers to be at the forefront of care for Aboriginal people.
“Our Aboriginal Health Workers know their communities better than anyone else, they know what works, but also have thoughts on how we could do things better.
“This forum gives our staff the opportunity to share and gather information, participate in workshops and consider new ways of improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people in the Kimberley.
“To get that inside knowledge from our staff on the ground, who have that intimate local level knowledge and experience, is invaluable.
“We are eager to progress the ideas and suggestions to continue our work towards building healthy and thriving communities in collaboration with our partners, and providing a safe and secure workplace,” he said.
Organised by the WACHS Regional Aboriginal Health Team, the event also included workshops, presentations, professional development opportunities and a round table discussion about some key issues facing our Aboriginal workforce.
