Medical student praises Bunbury Regional Hospital’s supportive culture
Jamie Pannett has praised the Bunbury Regional Hospital for creating a supportive, caring and engaging culture that helps students learn and thrive.
As part of his final year of Medicine at Flinders University, Jamie completed a five-week placement in the hospital's emergency department (ED).
Jamie's passion for rural health has seen him embark on a seven-year journey to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor.
While Jamie is studying in South Australia, he is keen to support his hometown of Bunbury and hopes he may return to work in the community, or in rural WA in some capacity.
"I can see myself becoming a WA Country Health Service employee of some form in the future," he said.
Jamie said his placement in the ED gave him the skills and confidence he needed.
"I'd like other medical students to know how valuable a placement at Bunbury Regional Hospital is," he said.
"The staff are really accommodating, and I found the ED to be a supportive environment.
"It's a large enough department that I was able to see a variety of different presentations managed with expert care within a rural emergency context.
"I felt welcomed and was able to closely follow a member of the team and learn from that person. Staff in a country hospital will respect you and there is a positive teaching culture."
Jamie grew up in Bunbury and started his tertiary studies at Edith Cowan University's South West campus. After completing his nursing degree, Jamie went straight into studying medicine.
We can't wait to see Jamie back in country WA following his passion.
