Junior doctor travels across the globe to work in the Midwest
Meet Dr Shema Sobih – Resident Medical Officer at Geraldton Health Campus.
Originally from Egypt, Dr Sobih began her internship and residency in tertiary hospitals abroad before joining WA Country Health Service.
“I came to Geraldton for the unique experience working in rural medicine,” she said.
Since moving to WA, Dr Sobih said she had built a supportive community around her working in country health.
“I’ve had enough time to learn about the system and received support from people right across the hospital,” she said.
“I’ve been able to ask for help at any time and found the supervisors knowledgeable and understanding.”
Dr Sobih said her work-life has made a big impact.
“WA Country Health Service has been so supportive since I started here, facilitating all the resources to help get me and my family settled.”
Regional Medical Director Dr Allan Pelkowitz said the hospital invites junior doctors from around the world to consider a stint in rural medicine.
“The experience you gain as a junior doctor in country health will benefit you for the rest of your career,” she said.
“As we expand the services offered at Geraldton over the coming years it means even more opportunities for you to help us deliver safe, efficient and life-changing care for rural communities.
“The redevelopment of Geraldton Health Campus is focussed on creating a modern and fit-for-purpose facility capable of handling the needs of the growing Midwest community, now and into the future”.
Dr Sobih said her advice to anyone considering a career in country health is simple.
“Don’t hesitate,” she said.
“There is a big family and a lot of good memories waiting for you in the Midwest.”
