Country health opens the doors to former nurses returning to the workforce
WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is bolstering its country nursing workforce through an initiative that supports nurses returning to the workplace to regain their registration.
WACHS’ Registered Nurse Re-Entry Program supports returning nurses to complete the necessary hours of supervised practice before being granted full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
WACHS Chief Operating Officer Rob Pulsford said the model was designed to provide a simplified pathway to support nurses looking to return to the workforce.
“This is very exciting initiative and we’re looking forward to seeing more nurses coming to us through this model.”
Mr Pulsford said the health service was also investing in staff development support across the regions, boosting the number of staff development resources available.
“In addition to on-the-ground support, we also provide regular training including specialist education and simulation sessions as well as advice and support via virtual technology.”
Mr Pulsford said the program was another way for health services to attract and retain staff in the bush.
“We know nurses and midwives are choosing country WA as a place to kickstart their careers - this year we’re welcoming nearly 200 newly qualified nurses and midwives, and that’s a new record for us.”
Returning nurse Georgie Nock said the program had allowed her to regain her registration while staying local at Warren Health Service.
“I gave up my registration about six years ago due to work and family circumstances.
“It’s been great to get back into my nursing career and I’ve really enjoyed working with such experienced nurses.”
Ms Nock said her supervisors at Warren Health Service had been extremely supportive throughout the process.
“Their knowledge, experience and skills coupled with their friendly and welcoming demeanour has been both educational and inspiring.
“I really appreciate being able to complete this close to home.”
