A passion for helping country women leads Dr Armitage to WA Rural Health Excellence Awards
WA Country Health Service Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Sara Armitage is in the running to become Specialist (Non-GP) of the Year at this year’s WA Rural Health Excellence Awards.
Dr Armitage – who is based at Geraldton Regional Hospital – said the nomination also belongs to the teams she works with.
“Obstetrics is the ultimate team sport – I’m able to work with midwives, emergency departments, anaesthetics, paediatrics, mental health and even occasionally the medics,” Dr Armitage said.
“Gynaecology lets me work with different fields again – surgery, oncology and even palliative care.”
Dr Armitage said what’s special about country care is that she’s not just helping a patient, but someone from the community in which she lives and works.
“Working in country WA you never forget that your patient is someone’s mother, daughter or sister and what their role in our community is,” she said.
“Being a generalist gynaecologist, means that I get to see females over the length of their lifespan,” Sara said.
“I’ve been able to assist some to get pregnant, involved in their pregnancies and sometimes taken them through menopause and beyond.”
Congratulations and thank you to Dr Armitage.
The awards will be announced at a ceremony Saturday 16 March 2024.
