Community comes first for Dr Northover
Geraldton Regional Hospital’s Dr Lenna Northover is a Dongara local and one of the record number of medical interns providing care to her community.
Dr Northover has had a varied educational journey - her love for animals led her to become a veterinary nurse, which sparked her interest in the medical field.
She then went on to study biomedical science and worked as a clinical specialist, guiding specialist teams on instrument and implant use in orthopaedics in hip and knee arthroplasty (joint replacement), this was followed by entering medicine.
Dr Northover always knew she wanted to return to the country, and her placements in Kalgoorlie and Broome during her final years of study confirmed this.
“These years were pivotal in my decision to remain rural for my internship,” she said.
“I applied for my internship in Geraldton to be surrounded by family and friends.”
Although she says the Midwest will always be home, Dr Northover looks forward to exploring more professional opportunities across WA – particularly in the Kimberley and the South West.
“My plan is to pursue a career as either a rural generalist or a rural general practitioner.”
