Country health supporting international junior doctor
After migrating to Australia in 2016 from Sri Lanka, Dr Dinesh Fernando found his feet at Kalgoorlie Health Campus.
Supported by WA Country Health Service (WACHS), he completed his placement for the Workplace Based Assessment program at Kalgoorlie Health Campus – and with flying colours.
“This was one of the biggest hurdles for an international medical graduate like myself,” he said.
“But the dedicated support received from the local WA Country Health Service staff was invaluable.”
As for living and working in country WA, Dr Fernando said Kalgoorlie hits the mark.
“The consultants look after their junior doctors very well - their teaching attitudes are amazing,” he said.
“They’ve motivated me to achieve my career goals, including an Advanced Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
“And pursual of rural generalist training with Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine,” he added.
When asked what advice he’d give to a junior doctor considering going rural, Dr Fernando said patient-centred care is crucial.
“Have a willingness to work in a small community,” he added.
“You’ll be amazed by the hands-on skills, education and experience you’ll gain from working in rural WA.
“The education and administration teams will help and look after you and engage with your local Junior Medical Officer society.”
