King’s Birthday Honours awarded to WA Country Health Service staff

Two WA Country Health Service have been awarded Australia’s highest honours.
Dr Christine Jeffries-Stokes and Professor Peter Vernon Van Heerden have been appointed as Members (AM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours List.
Dr Christine Jeffries-Stokes
Dr Jeffries-Stokes was recognised for her significant service as a paediatrician and her commitment to improving health equity for Aboriginal communities across the Goldfields.
Having worked at WA Country Health Service in Kalgoorlie since 1995, Dr Jeffries-Stokes has a deep understanding of the unique health needs of country WA residents.
She has also been a member of the executive committee of the Wongutha Birni Aboriginal Corporation since 1998, and an associate investigator with Telethon’s Centre for Research Excellence in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing since 2011.
In 2015, Dr Jeffries-Stokes was awarded the 20 Years of Service Award, West Australian Centre for Rural and Remote Medicine.
Professor Peter Vernon Van Heerden
Professor Van Heerder was recognised for his significant contributions in the field of intensive care medicine and his dedication to tertiary education.
Having authored and co-authored over 156 original papers in peer-reviewed journals, it’s safe to say, Professor Van Heerden has a passion for passing on his knowledge.
In 2019 he was awarded the Intensive Care Medal, College of Intensive Care Medicine Australia and New Zealand, 2019.
