WA Country Health Service’s virtual security hub has been named a finalist in the 2024 Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards.

The Awards recognise outstanding solutions and innovations to specific workplace health and safety problems in Western Australia.

Named for ‘Best solution to a work health and safety risk’ the nomination recognises the innovation, implementation and/or design of systems or procedures to improve health and safety.

Operating out of the 24/7 CCTV Operations Room, specialist closed-circuit television (CCTV) technology enables real-time support for regional hospitals and health services.

The service is operated by security personnel and has proven to enhance safety and deter antisocial behaviour at hospitals since going live in March and expanding to its eighth site in July.

Chief Executive Jeff Moffet said the innovative solution had come a long way since it launched earlier this year – having a significant impact on safety and security for staff, patients, and visitors.

“Violence against healthcare staff is unacceptable,” Mr Moffet said.

“Our geographical remoteness meant we had to take a new and innovative approach to help keep our people safe.

“Through the use of virtual technology, security experts based in the metropolitan area are able to alert security on-the-ground to any antisocial behaviour – often deescalating situations before they get violent.

“We regularly hear from staff on-the-ground about the peace of mind the service offers – just recently our team in Manjimup said the service put an immediate stop to an instance of anti-social behaviour at the facility.

“They told us the service made them feel very safe and confident and importantly, allowed them to keep doing their job without the threat of violence.”

Mr Moffet said the advanced security monitoring system was one part of a broader strategy that included local CCTV and security personnel, duress alarms and access control systems.

The virtual service is operational in Fitzroy Crossing, Kununurra, Halls Creek, Hedland, Karratha, Meekatharra, Collie and Bridgetown, and on demand, with further expansion earmarked for 2024.

Winners will be announced at the 2024 Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards ceremony on the morning of Thursday 31 October at Optus Stadium.
