New volunteers build stronger communities in the South West

WA Country Health Service has seen an incredible community response to a recruitment drive for volunteers to bring local community spirit into hospitals and health services across the South West.

Volunteers make an important contribution to the health and wellbeing of country communities, as well as take part in a vibrant network of locals looking out for one another, often making friends for life.

Cheryl Jewsbury who co-ordinates Bunbury Hospital volunteers said she was pleased by the strong response from the South West communities.

“It’s been really inspiring getting to know some of our new volunteers and hear what motivated them to put their hand up to volunteer in their local hospital or health centre,” she said.

“We know it’s sometimes difficult to spend time in hospital, either as a patient or as a loved one of someone injured or unwell.

“The newly recruited volunteers can help by doing social visits with patients in hospital, and driving health fleet cars to help community members get to appointments or get home after being discharged.

“We’re also looking to get our volunteers working as part of therapy dog teams,” she added.

Long standing Bunbury Hospital volunteer Carol Reid said she has found the role incredibly rewarding and valuable.

“Listening to people is a joy and a privilege, and I’m so happy to play a small role in improving someone’s experience while they’re in hospital,” she said.

“Volunteering is a great way to give back to the local community.”

Carol was a finalist for South West Volunteer of the Year in 2023, and is dedicated to supporting hospital patients and their families through their stays.

Volunteers do not conduct any clinical work and receive the same background and security checks as WACHS employees. Common jobs completed by volunteers include working Meet and greet teams, volunteer drivers, inpatient connection, or managing the hospital shops.

Further volunteers are being sought across South West health sites, and residents interested in volunteering are encouraged to get in contact at SWconsumerengagement@health.wa.gov.au.
