Healthcare workers provide sensitive care for Broome family
WA Country Health Service staff work hard every day to ensure our hospitals and health services are welcoming environments, particularly for members of the community who may need extra support and care.
Our Kimberley team recently had brilliant feedback from a Broome mum on the warm and sensitive care her neurodivergent son received on a recent visit to Broome Emergency Department.
She celebrated the way local healthcare workers took the time to understand her son’s needs to ensure a great outcome for the whole family.
“On presenting to the Emergency Department our doctor and nurse were kind and patient with him and took their time until he was settled to medically examine him.
“Every part of the process was carefully explained, and all his many questions answered patiently,” the mum said.
“This admission is the start of re-writing the pages and ensuring my son knows that hospital is a safe space and in his own words ‘where people will understand him and help him.’"
“As a mum I am so thankful.”
Neurodivergent is a term that describes people with variation in their mental functions and can include conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
WA Country Health Service Executive Director Kimberley Lisa Smith said she was proud of the local team and reiterated the importance of all people feeling safe and supported in the hospital environment.
“I’m proud of the entire team at Broome Health Campus for their effort to ensure our young patient felt safe and understood.
“Receiving this kind of feedback lets healthcare workers know their efforts are noticed and appreciated by those in their care.
“We work closely with carers and family members to communicate effectively with patients, understand their needs and concerns, or even get background on their prior experiences with healthcare professionals.
“We want our sites to be safe spaces for everyone and actively encourage our staff to adapt their approach to ensure the best outcome for each patient.”
