Dr Samir Heble shines a light on men’s mental health
This International Men’s Day, WA Country Health Service is highlighting the unique mental health challenges some men may experience.
Acting Executive Director Mental Health Dr Samir Heble is passionate about breaking down these barriers and creating a more open conversation around men’s mental health.
“Every man’s experience is different,” Dr Heble said.
“Breaking down stereotypes about what a man ‘should’ be is essential. Everyone has their own ways of dealing with stress and emotions and recognising this individuality is crucial in understanding mental health.”
Some common early symptoms of mental health that are typically overlooked include sleep disturbances, appetite changes and increased irritability.
Dr Heble encourages loved ones to pay attention to these shifts.
“Friends and family can offer support by being aware of these signs and responding in ways that feel natural,” he said.
“Sometimes, just listening and being present can make a difference.”
It’s important to remember there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to managing stress. Different people find solace in different activities with Dr Heble acknowledging what works for one person may not work for another.
“Recognising and respecting individuality can help men feel less alone in their journey,” he said.
