Former athlete turned doctor kickstarts his career back home

Former basketball player Dr Jet Hunter has swapped the court for the clinic. Now one of WA Country Health Service’s newest medical interns, Jet is excited to start his medical career at Broome Health Campus.

“My father’s father was a Bardi man, and I’ve always wanted an excuse to live in Broome and to get more in touch with my mob and my country,” he said.

Growing up in WA, Jet’s aspirations revolved around professional sports, basketball in particular.

A scholarship to play college basketball in the United States seemed like the perfect stepping stone toward achieving his dream. However, life had other plans and unforeseen health challenges prompted him to rethink his future.

After returning to Australia, Jet studied agricultural science, psychology, linguistics and commerce before turning to medicine.

“I was drawn to the ‘choose your own adventure’ element of medicine, and the fact that you could try out different pathways without having to completely restart your career.”

As he begins his internship at Broome Health Campus, Jet is eager to make an impact in the community that helped shape him.

“I’m looking forward to learning as much as possible and feeling like a member of the team,” he said.

“Broome Health Campus staff are extremely welcoming and supportive, and I’m excited to join them.”

Jet is particularly passionate about working with Aboriginal patients, building trust and inspiring younger generations.

“Perhaps being an example of a sportsman turned doctor can inspire them to engage with school despite potential sporting prospects, and perhaps seeing someone from their own town (and maybe family) in health can allow them to think of it as a realistic career possibility for themselves.”

While open to going wherever his career might take him, his heart is set on staying in the Kimberley long-term.

“I want to spend most of my career in the Kimberley, though I’m trying to begin my career with an open mind,” he said.

With a deep connection to Broome and a passion for helping others, this former athlete turned doctor is ready to make a difference and inspire others to dream big.
