New oncology prescribing system streamlines cancer treatments for country patients
Cancer patients across country WA are benefitting from the rollout of a new Oncology Management System, helping to streamline cancer treatments and replacing existing paper-based prescribing processes.
The new system – now live at Narrogin Health Service with Albany Health Campus and six other regional cancer centres to follow throughout 2025 – is an end-to-end cloud-based resource that digitises scheduling, prescribing, verification and administration of systemic anticancer therapies.
Once implemented, the system is accessible from any location at any time, enhancing visibility and service delivery across WA Country Health Service sites as well as providing greater continuity of care between metropolitan and country sites.
On World Cancer Day, WA Country Health Service is highlighting the incredible work of country clinicians providing cancer care closer to home.
Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery Maria Flynn said implementing the new system was another way the health service is leading the way in harnessing technology to deliver exceptional care.
“Innovation in healthcare is so important and we’re constantly working to make sure we stay at the forefront of advancements that improve patient care and support more efficient service delivery.
“We’ve been very pleased with the feedback from staff and patients at Narrogin and we’re looking forward to the rollout across country WA,” she said.
The system is also being implemented at South Metropolitan Health Service in tandem with the rollout at Albany, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Geraldton, Narrogin, Northam, Karratha and Broome.
A single database is shared between health services, allowing uniform access to patient clinical information at all participating hospital sites.
Albany Health Campus will be the second site in country WA to implement the new system, later this month with the remaining sites set to go live throughout 2025.
