With a steadfast commitment to advancing the Midwifery profession, Sian Skillcorn is driving significant improvements to maternal and newborn outcomes for country WA families.

As Clinical Midwife Educator for WA Country Health Service, Sian plays a key role in enhancing clinical standards and care quality, while fostering multidisciplinary professional development and teamwork within maternity services.

She supports more than 300 midwives and 150 obstetric and neonatal medical practitioners, ensuring they have access to comprehensive, evidence-based training.

Responsible for 18 maternity sites spread across 2.55 million square kilometres, Sian understands the logistical challenges of providing consistent, high-quality education across geographically dispersed regions.

This experience led her to pioneer the innovative use of video conferencing for neonatal resuscitation simulation training, which was showcased at a national conference.

Sian worked as a midwife in Portugal for nine years before moving to WA in 2012, where she became the first direct entry midwife appointed a permanent position in a tertiary maternity hospital birth suite.

Her ever-expanding expertise – which includes a recently completed Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education – is being used to develop new midwives and upskill existing ones while fostering a positive, compassionate workplace culture.

As a clinician she leads by example, providing respectful and culturally appropriate maternity care while supporting women through their childbirth journey.

Sian has been named a finalist at the 2025 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards in the category of Excellence in Midwifery.
