New cancer treatment service to be established at Geraldton Health Campus

The State Government has announced $21 million to establish a new cancer treatment service at Geraldton Health Campus, allowing Midwest residents to receive cancer treatments closer to home.
The funding will establish a radiation oncology service and deliver a state-of-the-art linear accelerator (LINAC).
A LINAC uses high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells, while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Currently, Midwest residents travel to Perth for their radiation oncology treatments, with subsidies for travel and accommodation through the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme.
This is in addition to a $9 million Commonwealth Government commitment through the Community Health and Hospitals Program.
The radiotherapy unit is part of the redevelopment of the Geraldton Health Campus ensuring the facility, supporting infrastructure, equipment and staffing provide world-class, safe and sustainable services for Midwest communities into the future.
