Northam Health Service has become our final cancer treatment site to adopt the Charm Oncology Management System, completing the statewide rollout of this award-winning technology.

A joint project between WA Country Health Service and South Metropolitan Health Service, Charm is a single electronic system for the scheduling, prescribing, verification and administration of chemotherapy.

It has now replaced paper-based processes at all eight of our cancer treatment sites, improving efficiency and collaboration across clinical teams.

Charm Lead Cancer Pharmacist Deborah Trotta said the system improves visibility and communication between disciplines, allowing access to patient pathways and charts both on-site and remotely.

“Charm strengthens evidence-based practice and improves patient safety while ensuring those receiving cancer treatment in regional areas receive the same high-quality care as those in metropolitan areas,” Deborah said.

“While it is early days, the new system is providing the Northam team with a strong clinical foundation along with more efficient and strengthened scheduling practices.”

Narrogin Health Service was the first site to adopt Charm in November 2024, followed by our health campuses in Albany, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Esperance, Geraldton and Broome.

Charm went live at Northam Health Service on 18 November – exactly one year and one day after Narrogin.

Deborah thanked everyone in the Northam team for their engagement, collaboration and support during the implementation process.

“Northam Cancer Services staff across all disciplines have embraced and championed the change from the beginning, and the dedicated team ensured a successful go-live experience for patients,” she said.

The Charm Oncology Management System Project recently received the award for Excellence in Safety and Quality at the 2025 WA Health Excellence Awards.

The project is part of our commitment to meet the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards User Guide for Medication Management in Cancer Care.
