‘Honouring a lifetime’ - Clinical Nurse Specialist Nicky’s care for dementia patients lands excellence award nomination
Having lived in several small towns across the South West before settling in Bunbury, Clinical Nurse Specialist Nicky Duncan is passionate about work that makes a difference for country communities.
Now, her work with the Specialist Dementia Care Program (SDCP) has been called out for special attention, with Nicky named a finalist in the 2026 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA).
“Being named a finalist is incredibly meaningful to me, as recognition has never been the reason I do this work—it’s always been about making a difference,” Nicky said.
“Caring for others has always felt very natural to me, and my travel and work experiences have truly guided the path I’m on today.
“My work is very hands-on and focused on providing compassionate, person-centred care, while also supporting families through complex situations.”
Having completed her nursing degree at Edith Cowan University in Bunbury, Nicky has spent the past 15 years working in various roles supporting rural communities with WA Country Health Service.
Nicky said her role brings together her professional experience and dedication for supporting people living with dementia.
“I feel honoured to be part of the process of transitioning people into a more suitable, purpose-designed environment that promotes safety, dignity, and improved outcomes.
“It is a privilege to work within the SDCP alongside the amazing team at Hall and Prior Older Mental Health, and the Regional Aged Care Team, supporting individuals experiencing changed behaviours associated with dementia.
“For me, the reward is in the small moments – a smile, a connection, a flicker of recognition.
“It is those moments that remind you, you’re not just caring for a person – you’re honouring a lifetime.”
Category winners of the 2026 Western Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, along with the 2026 WA Nurse or Midwife of the Year, and the recipient of the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Honour, will be announced this Saturday 9 May 2026 at the WANMEA Gala Ball.
