Local Lions dig deep to donate state-of-the-art clinical scopes for Broome

Broome Health Campus clinicians now have access to three new state-of-the-art VorOtek clinical scopes, thanks to the generosity of local volunteers.

The Lions Club of Broome raised more than $7400 to purchase and donate a new VorOtek L Scope, M Scope and O Scope for Broome Health Campus.

The head-worn scopes provide hands-free magnification and bright, shadow-free LED illumination, supporting clinicians to assess and treat patients while maintaining clear vision and comfort during procedures.

West Kimberley District Director James Sherriff said the donation would strengthen clinical capability across several busy areas of the hospital.

“These are highly valued clinical tools that enable our senior clinicians to see clearly, work hands-free and most effectively assess, treat and manage patients,” he said.

“The O Scope is particularly useful for ear, nose and throat care, the M Scope supports skin checks and minor skin procedures with a wide field of view, and the L Scope provides surgical loupes with integrated illumination for precision work.”

“Having these newer, improved hands-free scopes gives our teams more reliable access to equipment that is used regularly in day-to-day patient care.”

The Lions Club of Broome has been a longtime supporter of the hospital and raised the money for the scopes through regular fundraising at its 2025 boat raffle.

President Joy Balding said the club members love supporting their local health workers.

“The doctors, nurses, and everyone at the hospital do so much for people in our communities and we are very happy to help in any way we can.”

The Lions have previously donated colourful, hand-sewn quilts for the children’s ward, and provided baby bundles for the maternity ward.

“We’re always very happy to look into what we can do because it is for local people and that’s who we are there for.”

James said the new scopes would improve access to a well-used piece of clinical equipment and thanked the community for their generosity.

“This donation gives our clinicians modern, reliable tools that support more efficient care for patients across Broome and the wider West Kimberley,” he said.

“We’re very grateful to the Lions Club, as well as all the community members and organisations that donated to make this purchase possible.”
