Making sure you count - what to do if you are in a hospital or care facility during the Census 2026
Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and household in Australia – this is called the Census of Population and Housing.
The next Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026.
The Census form asks questions about your age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education.
Census data is used to inform decisions about transport, schools, health care, infrastructure and business. It also helps plan local services for individuals, families and communities.
The Census is compulsory. Everyone in Australia on Census night must be included on a Census form.
For patients and visitors staying at a hospital or care facility on Census night
- If you’re staying in a hospital or care facility on Census night, you’ll need to complete a Census form.
- The hospital or care facility staff will provide Census forms and collect completed forms to return to us.
- If you need help, you can ask a family member, friend, or trusted person to assist you.
- If you’re admitted and staying overnight, you’ll be counted at the hospital.
- If you’re staying with a family member or loved one in a hospital or care facility, you’ll be counted as a visitor there and should also complete a Census form at that location.
- If you’re in the Emergency Department on Census night (including overnight) and not admitted, you won’t be counted at the hospital. You’ll need to complete a form for your usual address.

- Information sessions
- Pop-up hubs
- Fill in the form sessions
