Applications open for inaugural WA Rural Pathway for Emergency Medicine cohort

WA Country Health Service is proud to announce the launch of a new initiative to support the delivery of emergency medicine in rural and remote WA.

As of Monday 21 September, applications are open for the inaugural WA Rural Pathway for Emergency Medicine (WARPEM) cohort, commencing in 2027.

Coordinated by WA Country Health Service’s Medical Education Unit, the new pathway will support doctors who are interested in long-term emergency medicine opportunities in country WA.

Part of the health service’s strategy to provide advanced training opportunities to country-based doctors, the launch of WARPEM follows recent successes with the launch of the Rural Physician Training Pathway and the Intensive Care Training Pathway.

Bringing extensive experience in rural emergency medicine and a dedication to medical education WARPEM’s Directors of Clinical Training are two of WA’s most experienced Emergency Consultants – Dr Cassandra Host and Dr Clare Trythall.

Dr Host – who doubles as the Director of Strategy and Innovation at Joondalup Health Campus – has extensive experience working across regional health services throughout WA and said the initiative reflected WA Country Health Service’s ongoing commitment to expanding rural training opportunities.

“This program will support trainee development while also strengthening country WA’s future emergency medicine workforce,” Dr Host said.

By creating these pathways we’re laying the groundwork for a sustainable emergency medicine workforce for rural and remote communities.”

With extensive experience in medical education including as a senior lecturer and with the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia, Dr Trythall is Co-Director of Emergency Medicine Training at Bunbury Hospital.

“The launch of this pathway marks an important milestone for rural emergency medicine training in Western Australia,” Dr Trythall said.

“We’re creating amazing new opportunities for our trainees while also supporting our communities to have access to high quality healthcare, no matter where they live.”

The program will not only benefit Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) trainees but also increase opportunities for other vocational college trainees across WA Country Health Service.

Participants in WARPEM will benefit from:

• Priority access to WA Country Health Service rotations accredited with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM)
• Individualised training plans tailored to training and career goals
• Support to access metropolitan rotations where required
• Additional education, mentoring and career development opportunities

Applications for the inaugural WARPEM cohort commencing in 2027 are now open.

To apply, applicants must:

• Hold or have submitted an eligible application for a WA Country Health Service Registrar contract for 2027.
• Be a current FACEM Training Program trainee or have submitted an eligible application to ACEM for acceptance into the 2027 training year.

Applications are welcome from trainees across all ACEM training stages.
