Community gathers for launch of a culturally safe eating disorder screening tool
WA Country Health Service recently launched Australia’s first culturally co-designed eating disorder screening tool for Aboriginal young people (12-24 years).
The commencement of the pilot marks a significant milestone for the project and was celebrated with a community led launch event at White Gum Park in Kununurra.
The event included a shared barbecue, children’s activities, and opportunities to connect with community members to learn more about the project - as well as watch the premiere of the project’s new animation.
Project Manager and Clinical Lead Dr Bronwyn Raykos said it was great to see the community engagement activities come together and celebrate the launch.
“The community event at White Gum park was a perfect way to celebrate the launch, she said.
“It was great to see families, young people and community members come along have a yarn and learn more about the project in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
“It’s also wonderful to see the community’s contribution to the project and celebrating what we have achieved together.”
The project is a collaboration between WA Country Health Service and our Kimberley partners (Wunan Health and Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service) and local communities.
The feelings about my body and eating tool will help support timely referral and equitable care for Aboriginal young people with eating disorders.
The pilot is supported by a Telethon research grant and is an important step towards improving early identification of eating disorders and ensuring Aboriginal young people can access the right support, sooner.
