Acute Psychiatric Unit

The Geraldton Acute Psychiatric Unit is a 15-bed inpatient facility located on the Ground Floor of the Geraldton Health Campus.

It provides contemporary, recovery-oriented inpatient care within a safe, healing and therapeutic environment.

The unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team made up of psychiatrists, medical officers, nurses, Aboriginal mental health workers, peer workers and allied health staff. It is designed to care for those who are too unwell to safely receive care in the community.

Supporting people from Geraldton and across the Midwest region, the service delivers trauma-informed, healing-informed, and culturally responsive care that recognises the importance of cultural identity, connection, lived experience, family involvement, and community support in recovery.

Our vision is to provide clinically excellent, culturally safe, and recovery-focused mental health care that enables people to access support closer to home, remain connected to their families, communities and Country.

The Acute Psychiatric Unit provides:

  • Comprehensive mental health assessment
  • Inpatient treatment and stabilisation
  • Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) services for people requiring a higher level of support and observation
  • Medication management and physical health care
  • Individual and group therapeutic programs
  • Cultural support and engagement with Aboriginal mental health workers, Aboriginal health practitioners, Elders, and traditional healers
