Educational opportunities
Medical education and training
You can expect quality education programs in your rural placement that provide you with the core skills you are expected to learn at each stage of your medical training.
In each country region, the central Medical Education Unit (MEU) supports junior doctors and the regional medical education teams to provide professional development. The regional Director of Clinical Training and Medical Education Officer will also facilitate the delivery of customised education and training programs that reflect the local context and speciality areas.
The range of professional development opportunities available through the central MEU include communication, mentoring and leadership programs conducted for junior doctors and clinical supervisors.

Resuscitation and simulation education
The MEU Simulation Education Coordinators are responsible for the development, coordination and delivery of a multitude of resuscitation and simulation based training across WA Country Health Service. Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET)
The Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) Program was established to improve the quality of and access to emergency care in areas of need - particularly in rural Australia. This is achieved through the increased provision of emergency medicine education, training and supervision led and delivered by Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.
The WACHS EMET program is comprised of six regional and one central hub. Central EMET opportunities are detailed below. To express your interest in attending, click on the location and date of the relevant course and complete the EOI form.

Essentials of Rural Trauma Care Course (ERTCC) |

Overview: This one-day course provides interprofessional, rural clinicians with solid knowledge, skills, and expertise to be able to manage critically ill trauma patients confidently and competently, many km’s away from the state trauma centre. Facilitated by a multi-disciplinary faculty with critical care and trauma backgrounds, participants will enjoy a mix of plenary sessions, skills workshops and small group discussions. |

Overview: This one-day course aims to take rural trauma team education to the next level. The WA EMET Central Hub has partnered with the State Trauma Unit at RPH and the WA Trauma Training and Education Unit to bring this high fidelity, trauma masterclass to regional WA. Aimed at interprofessional, rural practitioners who want to hone their knowledge and skills when caring for critically ill and injured rural trauma patients. |
Vital Anaesthesia Simulation Training (VAST) Facilitator Course |

Overview: VAST is a not-for-profit organisation offering programs aimed at overcoming the barriers to widespread delivery of simulation-based education. This 3-day facilitator course is designed to be adaptable and flexible, accommodating participants of varied clinical backgrounds. No prior simulation experience is required. It is aimed at those involved or interested in healthcare education who want to explore using simulation training in their setting. |

Safe Assessment and Management of the Aggressive Patient (SAMAP) |

Overview: The SAMAP Workshop is an interactive one-day program that has been designed to assist health professionals in the assessment and management of the aggressive patient. Psychiatric Emergencies Assessment and Care (PEACe) |

Overview: The PEACe Workshop is an interactive one-day program facilitated by a team of emergency medicine and mental health clinicians, designed for medical practitioners and nurses, who practise in rural and remote settings and are looking to refresh their expertise in mental health diagnosis and treatment. This program equips participants with the skills required to manage patients with chronic mental health conditions who present to the emergency department in crisis. |
