Educational opportunities

Medical education and training

You can expect quality education programs in your rural placement that provide you with the core skills you are expected to learn at each stage of your medical training.

In each country region, the central Medical Education Unit (MEU) supports junior doctors and the regional medical education teams to provide professional development. The regional Director of Clinical Training and Medical Education Officer will also facilitate the delivery of customised education and training programs that reflect the local context and speciality areas.

The range of professional development opportunities available through the central MEU include communication, mentoring and leadership programs conducted for junior doctors and clinical supervisors.

Explore regional and central training opportunities across our resuscitation and simulation education programs and Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) program below.

About our programs

Advanced Neo Resus

Neoresus© is a specialised training program that has been designed to standardise the way in which newborn resuscitation is taught in Victoria and other areas of Australia. NeoResus© practice is based on up-to-date research and evidenced-based practice. It aligns with the Australian and New Zealand Committee of Resuscitation (ANZCOR) guidelines published in April 2021 and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Neonatal Guidelines.

The Advanced NeoResus Program comprises of teamwork-focused training. It is face-to-face, multidisciplinary and is supported by online, evidence-based learning modules, which are completed by all program participants and accessible via MyLearning (NLS EL2).

ANLS is a mandatory required every three years for midwives and paediatricians.

For further information please contact wachs.neoresus@health.wa.gov.au.

Rural and Remote Emergency Medicine (RREM) Skills Workshop

RREM is an interactive two-day program that focuses on developing the emergency management skills and knowledge of rural and remote clinicians. Facilitated by experienced emergency and critical care clinicians the workshop addresses both adult and paediatric emergency presentations.

Essentials of Rural Trauma Care (ERTC)

This one-day course provides interprofessional, rural clinicians with solid knowledge, skills, and expertise to be able to manage critically ill trauma patients confidently and competently, many km’s away from the state trauma centre. Facilitated by a multi-disciplinary faculty with critical care and trauma backgrounds, participants will enjoy a mix of plenary sessions, skills workshops and small group discussions.

Advanced Rural Trauma Care (ARTC)

This one-day course aims to take rural trauma team education to the next level. The WA EMET Central Hub has partnered with the State Trauma Unit at RPH and the WA Trauma Training and Education Unit to bring this high fidelity, trauma masterclass to regional WA. Aimed at interprofessional, rural practitioners who want to hone their knowledge and skills when caring for critically ill and injured rural trauma patients.

Vital Anaesthesia Simulation Training (VAST) Facilitator Course

VAST is a not-for-profit organisation offering programs aimed at overcoming the barriers to widespread delivery of simulation-based education. This 3-day facilitator course is designed to be adaptable and flexible, accommodating participants of varied clinical backgrounds. No prior simulation experience is required. It is aimed at those involved or interested in healthcare education who want to explore using simulation training in their setting.

Vital Anaesthesia Simulation Training (VAST) Course

VAST is a not-for-profit organisation offering programs aimed at overcoming the barriers to widespread conduct of simulation-based education. This two-day course has a focus on perioperative and emergency care, and the development of non-technical skills such as effective team working and communication.

Safe Assessment and Management of the Aggressive Patient (SAMAP)

The SAMAP Workshop is an interactive one-day program that has been designed to assist health professionals in the assessment and management of the aggressive patient. Facilitated by a team of emergency and mental health clinicians, this course aims to support rural and remote medical practitioners to expand their mental health emergency skills and knowledge.

Psychiatric Emergencies Assessment and Care (PEACe)

The PEACe Workshop is an interactive one-day program facilitated by a team of emergency medicine and mental health clinicians, designed for medical practitioners and nurses, who practise in rural and remote settings and are looking to refresh their expertise in mental health diagnosis and treatment. This program equips participants with the skills required to manage patients with chronic mental health conditions who present to the emergency department in crisis.
