State-of-the-art Linac technology installed in Albany
Albany’s new radiation oncology facility is on the home stretch with specialist Linac technology installed.
This marks the final stage of the $13.1 million Albany Radiation Oncology project.
The specialised Linac Suite, which uses high energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells while sparing the surrounding tissue, was installed on 28 January 2023.
Once complete, the facility will offer potentially lifesaving cancer care close to home – saving Great Southern residents hundreds of kilometres of travel and multiple trips to Perth or Bunbury, able to remain close to family, friends and broader support networks while undergoing treatment.
Regional Director Great Southern Geraldine Ennis said the Linac Suite installation is the latest development in the project along with local artwork to improve the patient experience.
“The installation of the Linac Suite is an exciting milestone and means we have reached the final stages of Albany’s first radiation oncology service.
“In addition to the Linac drop, local artwork has been installed at the site – helping create a welcoming environment for patients and their families.
“The artwork showcases natural scenery, flora and fauna and vibrant colours reflective of the Great Southern’s landscapes.”
Australian-based integrated oncology provider GenesisCare has a 10-year contract to operate the service.
GenesisCare's radiation oncologists and specialist team will work alongside clinicians from WA Country Health Service to provide treatment for cancers including prostate, breast, lung and colorectal cancers, as well as palliative treatments for symptom control.
The facility is due to become operational in the second quarter of 2023 following the completion of main works and commissioning.
The project builds on the WA Country Health Service’s Cancer Strategy - aimed at improving and expanding the delivery of cancer services across country WA.
