Medical admin Teghan turns healthcare worker
WA Country Health Service’s Teghan Russell switched the screens for scrubs when she joined the record intake of newly graduated nurses and midwives in 2023.
Teghan worked as a medical administrator and ward clerk for more than 10 years before deciding she wanted a more hands-on career in healthcare. That’s when she turned to nursing.
She completed her studies at Edith Cowan University and graduated in 2022. Teghan undertook her graduate program at country health in 2023, and she has since advanced her career in the bush.
Originally from Donnybrook, Teghan always knew she wanted to work in the country and the program helped her land her dream job in Broome.
“I grew up in the country and much prefer it to living in the city. I was keen to explore a different part of the state once I completed my studies and I’m now happily living and working in the Kimberley,” she said.
“I’m working in the Theatre Department at Broome Hospital. I was really lucky to get my dream grad job, with six months on the general ward and six months in theatre, which is the area of nursing I want to continue in.”
Teghan said that there’s lots of opportunity in the country and has had many memorable moments.
“Seeing a caesarean section for the first time was a pretty amazing experience, which was then topped when I scrubbed for a caesarean section on my own,” she added.
For upcoming graduates, Teghan’s advice is to make the most of every opportunity.
“Working in the country is a unique experience and you will get the chance to do things you wouldn’t otherwise be doing in the city,” she said.
The WA Country Health Service welcomes nearly 200 newly qualified nurses and midwives this year – a record number.
