Albany's Kerin Young recognised for cancer work
Everyone working at Albany Health Campus knows Kerin Young, a key member of our Great Southern Cancer Services team.
Kerin has worked as a nurse for many years, both in the Great Southern as well as overseas. She loves the community feeling that comes from working in a regional hospital.
Earlier this month Kerin was announced as a nominee for the WA Health Excellence Awards’ Health Hero Award.
Kerin hailed her job as a meaningful one because of the impact her work has on the patients and their families that she sees every week.
“Having the opportunity to provide patients and their carers with the tools to manage the impact of their disease and treatment and ultimately to live well and be able to continue to do the things that they enjoy doing,” she said.
“I’ve helped develop a service which improves patient access to cancer care and see its positive impact on patients and the health care team.”
When asked how she felt to be nominated as a “health hero” she said the fact the recognition was from the community made it even more touching.
“I feel honoured and humbled by the recognition especially from those who are central to what I do.”
Kerin was nominated by a patient. In her nomination, the patient said Kerin had a remarkable depth of knowledge coupled with a bright and bubbly personality.
“She puts you at ease, she gives you easy to understand cancer information and provides hope and understanding,” the patient said.
The WA Health Excellence Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony held on Thursday 7 November.
