Dr Ella Forkin’s return to care for the Goldfields
For Dr Ella Forkin, returning to Kalgoorlie via the WA Country Health Service and WA Health Community Residency Program was more than a career move – it was a chance to reconnect and give back to the community that shaped her.
As a Resident Medical Officer in the Paediatrics Unit at Kalgoorlie Health Campus, Ella worked alongside the clinicians who looked after her as a baby, cared for newborns of old school friends, and helped local kids through key health and development milestones.
“Coming back to the bush and the beauty of the Goldfields was such an enriching experience,” Dr Forkin said.
“The community spirit and camaraderie in Kalgoorlie is something special – I’ll always treasure it.”
Dr Forkin’s days were filled with variety — from neonatal resuscitation to ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and being first responder on-call — all under the guidance of experienced paediatricians in the Goldfields.
“Their knowledge and skill in caring for patients from all walks of life has been invaluable in helping me grow as a doctor,” she said.
When she wasn’t working, Dr Forkin made the most of being back in her hometown, enjoying quiz nights, evenings around the campfire, exploring old mine sites, and catching up with family and friends.
She is now serving as a Resident Medical Officer at Rockingham General Hospital, working in general medicine, after recently completing her stint at Kalgoorlie
Dr Forkin recommended rural medicine to any junior doctor keen to challenge themselves professionally while enjoying an excellent work-life balance.
“I’ve loved caring for the community I know and love,” she said.
“Whether you’re returning to your roots or trying the bush for the first time, you’ll find opportunities and experiences here you won’t get anywhere else.”
