Wheatbelt stalwart Steven Douglas celebrates 40 years of service
A lot has changed since 1985, but one thing has stayed the same – Steven Douglas is still a much-loved member of the Northam Health Service team.
Steven, who is our Accommodation and Fleet Coordinator for the Wheatbelt, was this month presented with a Certificate of Recognition for an incredible 40 years with WA Country Health Service.
Speaking at a morning tea to mark the occasion, Wheatbelt Infrastructure Business Manager Jay Woodgate paid tribute to Steven’s longevity.
“In the 1980s, Australia won and lost the America’s Cup; Commodores, Falcons and Sigmas dominated our roads; and a young Steve Douglas started at Northam Hospital,” Jay said.
“Fast-forward to the 2020s and we all now carry a computer in our pockets, Australia doesn't even compete in the America’s Cup, and Holden doesn't exist anymore – but an older Steven Douglas remains working at WA Country Health Service Wheatbelt.”
Steven has worn many hats over the decades including Groundsman, Cleaner, Hygiene Orderly, Orderly, Stores Clerk, Purchasing Officer, and Supply Manager.
Whatever the role, his commitment to the job and consideration for others has never faltered.
“During my time with Steve – and I am sure many others have found this as well – his generosity and eagerness to help everyone has been immeasurable,” Jay said.
“His integrity has not only benefited WA Country Health Service Wheatbelt but the community as a whole here in Northam.”
Asked what the highlight had been, Steven cited “the laughter, the challenges”, and the “unwavering support” of his colleagues.
“After 40 years with WA Country Health Service, what keeps me here is the deep sense of purpose and the incredible people I’ve shared this journey with,” he said.
“It’s never been just a job; it’s being part of something bigger, where care, compassion, and commitment truly make a difference.”
