Karratha Community Residency Program prepares Dr Joshua Jones for General Practice
For metropolitan-based Resident Medical Officer Dr Joshua Jones, undertaking rural rotation through the Community Residency Program (CRP) has expanded his skills in a different setting.
The Community Residency Program (CRP) is a rotational opportunity available to Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) to expand their skill set in a challenging, interesting and supportive learning environment.
Positions are available across country WA including Kununurra, Derby, Karratha, Geraldton, Esperance, Kalgoorlie and Narrogin.
Dr Jones – who is usually based at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) – took up a placement in Karratha to build his experience.
“I wanted something different from the usual ward rotations at SCGH,” Dr Jones said.
“I’m planning to become a GP so the chance to do clinic work and general medicine mixed with emergency was really attractive.”
This change of scenery has enabled Dr Jones to treat patients at Onslow Health Service’s outpatient clinic – which he said was a highlight - as well as being able to explore the Pilbara.
“Visiting Onslow Health Service was a highlight,” he said.
“I saw patients independently in the outpatient clinic, which gave me valuable experience for transitioning to community GP practice next year.
“Outside of work, I’ve also enjoyed exploring the Pilbara, joining social sports, and making new friends with fellow junior doctors.”
For other RMOs – especially those considering general practice - Dr Jones highly recommended a rural rotation.
“The emergency department and clinics are usually less busy than in Perth, which means more time to think through each case and really get to know patients,” he said.
“It’s a fantastic learning environment.
"If you’re considering becoming a GP, I highly recommend this experience - it’s a great rotation,” he added.
