Expanded specialist allied health and specialist dental services for Patient Assisted Travel Scheme
From 1 July, the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS) eligibility is expanding to include selected specialist allied health and specialist dental services.
PATS is a critical program that supports patients who need to travel to access specialist medical services that are not available locally.
It is especially significant for country communities as it helps overcome the challenge of distance, ensuring people can access healthcare no matter where they live.
Eligible PATS consumers will be able to claim reimbursements for eligible specialist allied health and specialist dental services from 1 July 2026. Claims will be considered for previous eligible appointments attended from 1 January 2026.
Executive Director Strategy and Change Melissa Vernon said that the expansion would be welcomed by rural and remote communities.
“Expanding eligibility to include specialist allied health and specialist dental services is going to help reduce financial pressure and improve access to essential healthcare for people right across country WA,” Melissa said.
Melissa added that the expansion is in addition to current services, which will not be impacted.
“We want country communities to be assured that this expansion does not change existing access to PATS.”
The PATS team has created a suite of resources to help patients navigate the changes, including:
