    Winner in the Wheatbelt: Local named Nurse of the Year 14 May 2018 A York man has taken out the top gong at the Western Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards at the weekend. Brett Hayes, a Nurse Manager with the WA Country Health Service (WACHS), was acknowledged for his specialist work in palliative care and named the Western Australia’s Nurse of the Year. Mr Hayes, who works exclusively in the Wheatbelt region, has been a nurse for 10 years and originally commenced his career in the city. “There is quite a contrast between metropolitan and regional nursing,” Mr Hayes said. “Here, we’re encouraged to think innovatively and given freedom to explore new ideas,” he added. Referencing his work in bringing telehealth into the homes of patients in the Wheatbelt, Mr Hayes said listening to patients and their families had been fundamental to project development. “We’re very good at problem solving here in the c...

    Local artists selected for new cancer hostel 07 May 2018 Five local artists have been selected to provide artwork at the new Midwest Cancer Hostel. The artwork comprises paintings and photographic canvases which will adorn the walls of the hostel as well as screening to separate the onsite car park and communal garden areas. The $1.38 million Midwest Cancer Hostel is on track for completion next month and will include seven double rooms providing accommodation for cancer patients and their carers from outlying remote communities, to enable access to cancer treatment and/or specialist cancer services closer to home. The hostel is being constructed by the WA Country Health Service as part of funding totalling $5.48 million provided by the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund (HHF) which included $4.1 million for the Midwest Cancer Centre that opened in November 2016.     Emergency department and outpatient facilities opened 26 April 2018 Agricultural Region MLC Darren West represented Health Minister Roger Cook today to officially open the main build component of the Katanning Health Service, which is undergoing a major redevelopment. The redevelopment is part of a $300 million capital works program that is improving healthcare infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Mid-West and South-West regions.
