Inaugural parenting course for Dads proves popular 26 February 2019 A Circle of Security (COS) parenting course offered to Dads in the Busselton region has generated overwhelmingly positive feedback. Jill Rogers, Community Health Nurse with WA Country Health Service's Naturaliste Community Health and one of the course facilitators said the 'Dads only' evening group was held for the first time in response to requests from the community. The course facilitators were impressed with the insight of the group as well as the open and honest discussions each week, according to Ms Rogers. "We saw how much the Dads enjoyed not only connecting with each other but also developing confidence in their parenting skills," Ms Rogers said. "Attendance was excellent and the networking that developed (between the Dads) throughout the course was astounding," she added. Bunbury leading the way with positive birth education programs 25 February 2019 Bunbury Hospital has broken new ground by becoming one of the first public hospitals in Australia to offer a Positive Birth Program for expecting parents for free. Midwife and coordinator of the program, Kasey Biggar said the initiative was an exciting development for expecting parents. The course focuses on the best practice complementary therapies for birth such as breathing and relaxation techniques, acupressure, yoga techniques and physio support, while maintaining the principles of the medical model such as induction of labour, pain relief and unexpected outcomes. “A recent Australian study highlighted the importance of attending a program that included complementary therapies to support labour and birth,” said Ms Biggar. “It basically halved the intervention rates for births, but the evidence also shows the courses can make a hugely positive difference to the b...

New Cunderdin Health Centre becomes operational 29 January 2019 The innovative new Cunderdin Health Centre is now in use by the local community after recently opening its doors. Wheatbelt Regional Director Sean Conlan said the centre promises a new era in health care with a focus on promoting good health, preventing illness and the management of chronic disease. “The new centre will give the local community improved primary health and community care facilities to keep people healthy and well in the region,” said Mr Conlan. The new Health Centre which replaces the old Cunderdin hospital was developed in consultation with the local community and gives the community access to a range of health services and providers under one roof. Change to emergency department location at Northam Health Service 25 January 2019 The redevelopment of the $42 million Northam Health Service is progressing well and the refurbishment of the emergency department is now complete. From 10 am on Wednesday 6 February 2019, visitors to the Health Service will access emergency services via the new public entrance to the emergency department which is located on Robinson St, in Northam. WA Country Health Service Wheatbelt Regional Director Sean Conlan said visitors to the emergency department should experience a seamless transition to the outstanding new facilities with the planned relocation of services to the new area in advance of the opening. “We thank the local community in advance for their patience and understanding as we transition to our improved emergency department,” Mr Conlan said. Narrogin receives maternity reaccreditation following perfect score 22 January 2019 Narrogin Health Campus received a perfect assessment score from the Baby Friendly Health Initiative in its maternity facility reaccreditation. The Australian College of Midwives which assess accreditations found that Narrogin Health Campus met the criteria to an excellent standard across all assessment areas and received a score of 100% for implementing each of the10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Nav St. Louis, Program Manager at the Australian College of Midwives said the accomplishment was a reflection of the health service’s passion and commitment to supportive breastfeeding culture. “It took a lot of effort and dedication and Narrogin Health Campus deserves this recognition for its continuing commitment to women and families in the Wheatbelt,” Nav St. Louis said.
